James Gatwood was a 33-year-old seaman from Portsmouth who served aboard the merchant ship Bunker Hill. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Gatwood died on February 17, 1815, with variola recorded as his cause of death.
