John William Mullaney, Jr. was born on December 19, 1918, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He served in the 512th Fighter Squadron, 406th Fighter Group, as a Captain and Pilot of the P47 D-27-RE #42-26791 L3*W during World War II.

On July 30, 1944, Cpt Mullaney took off from Station 417 in Ashford, England, on an armed reconnaissance mission to northern France. He was killed when his aircraft, flying at too low altitude, touched the ground with its bombs and exploded at 08:35. His plane crashed into Montagne-Fayel - 25 km of Amiens. Originally buried in the town cemetery of Dreuil-Les-Molliens, Cpt Mullaney is now buried in the North Burial Ground, Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA.
