Ray Edward DeMeritt was born on January 25, 1923, in Key West, Florida. He served in the 513th Fighter Squadron, 406th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of the P-47 D-11-RE #42-75223 during World War II.
On June 23, 1944, he took off from Station 417 in Ashford, England, on an armed reconnaissance mission to the Chartres-Voves region in France. Around 6:15 PM, his airplane was hit by flak during an attack on a truck. He evacuated the burning plane, and it exploded upon reaching the ground. 2Lt DeMeritt was taken as a prisoner and was sent to a hospital in Chartres, where he died from the wounds he received in the incident. He is now buried in the Key West Cemetery, Key West, Monroe County, Florida, USA.
