Richard E. Bohannon served in the 34th Troop Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, as a Captain and Pilot of the C-47A #43-15308 during Operation Market Garden in World War II.

The crew was involved in a paratroop mission over The Netherlands. En route, on September 17, 1944, while approaching the target area, the aircraft was shot down by German flak near Heijningen, the Netherlands. All 15 paratroopers and a crew member were able to abandon the aircraft and bailed out. Out of control, the aircraft dove into the ground and crashed in a field, killing the last four crew members.

Cpt Bohannan is now buried in the Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, Westchester County, New York, USA.
