Leo LaCroix Byrne was born on March 27, 1921. He served in the 309th Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was flying aboard Douglas C-47A-10-DK Skytrain 42-108873, which collided with C-47A 43-15341 on July 8, 1944, during mass paratroop exercise and crashed near Tinwell, England. A total of 8 crew and 26 Polish paratroopers in both aircraft died.

1Lt Byrne is now buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
