Manuel L. Cohen was born on August 28, 1921. He was the son of Abraham Cohen and Pearl Esther Byk Cohen. He was married to Emma Hertzman Cohen.

Manuel served in the 43rd Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, as a Technical Sergeant during World War II. A crew member on the C-47 43-15251, he was killed in the crash of their aircraft when it was shot down by German flak while pulling in a troop-carrying glider on approach to Wesel. The airplane crashed in a field, killing all four crew members:
