Josh Gwynn was an 18-year-old seaman from Salem who served aboard the merchant ship Herald. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Grayson died on February 22, 1815, with variola recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
