James G. Leonard was born on January 1, 1918. He was the son of Maude Irene Grey Leonard.

James served in the 309th Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was killed in a mid-air collision of the Douglas C-47A-10-DK Skytrain 42-108873 and C-47A 43-15341 on July 8, 1944, during mass paratroop exercise and crashed near Tinwell, England. A total of 8 crew and 26 paratroopers in both aircraft died.

1Lt Leonard is now buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
