Born in Kalispell on June 3, 1912, he attended grade school in Montana and graduated from Flathead High School in 1942. He enlisted and trained as a flight engineer in the army air corps. TSgt Saling was killed in the mid-air collision of the Douglas C-47A-10-DK Skytrain 42-108873 and C-47A 43-15341 on July 8, 1944, during mass paratroop exercise and crashed near Tinwell, England. A total of 8 crew and 26 paratroopers in both aircraft died.

TSgt Saling is now buried in the Conrad Memorial Cemetery, Kalispell, Flathead County, Montana, USA.
