Winfield Scott was born on October 22, 1923, in Georgia. He was the son of Kenneth Jordan Scott and Bertha Ann Lee Scott.

Winfield served in the 43rd Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, as a Technical Sergeant and Engineer of a C-47 during World War II. On March 4, 1945, his C-47 crashed just after dusk in bad weather near Halton RAF station, Buckinghamshire, England, on a return flight from Brussels, Belgium. Also killed were 2nd Lt. Charles V. Smith (pilot); 2nd Lt. Robert W. Masling (copilot); and SSergeant David Francis.

TSgt Scott is now buried in the Buck Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sylvania, Screven County, Georgia, USA.
