Charles V. Smith, Jr. entered military service in California. He served in the 43rd Troop Carrier Squadron, 315th Troop Carrier Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of a C-47 during World War II.

On March 4, 1945, his aircraft crashed just after dusk in bad weather near Halton RAF station, Buckinghamshire, England, on a return flight from Brussels, Belgium. Also killed were: 2nd Lt. Robert W. Masling (copilot); SSergeant David Francis; and TSergeant Winfield Scott (Flight Engineer).

2Lt Smith is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
