James Hart was a 28-year-old seaman from New London who served aboard the merchant ship Courier. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Hart died on July 8, 1814, with pneumonia recorded as his cause of death.
