Frederick Hawley was a 23-year-old seaman from Wilmington who served aboard the merchant ship Royal William. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Hawley died on February 5, 1815, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
