Joseph Haycock was a 55-year-old gunner from Portland who served aboard the merchant ship Syren. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Haycock died on March 20, 1815, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
