Bernard E. Peak was born in 1922 in Illinois. He was the son of Luther Edward Peak and Lucille Shaw Peak.
Bernard served in the 853rd Bomber Squadron, 491st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Gunner on the B-24 #42-95191 during World War II. On June 20, 1944, his airplane took a direct hit from an 88mm shell which blew away most of the nose section, on a mission to Germany. Unfortunately, S/Sgt Thomas E Fulbright and S/Sgt Bernard E Peak (Gunners) both elected to bale out before the forced landing, delayed opening their parachutes, and were killed instantly when they fell onto the sands.
SSgt Peak is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
