Francis Hobday was a 25-year-old marine from Virginia who served aboard the merchant ship Rattlesnake. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Hobday died on February 24, 1814, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
