William Hughes Young was born on October 31, 1919. He was the son of Sam Houser Young and Ruth Oliver Young. He graduated from W. H. Adamson High School and attended Southern Methodist University. At the time he entered the Army Air Forces, he was employed by the Republic Life Insurance Company.
Young received his wings as a fighter pilot at Luke Field, Arizona. He was one of the first fliers sent to Europe after America entered the war.
1Lt Young served in the 1st Fighter Group during World War II. He was Killed in Action on October 2, 1942. His P-38 was shot down in aerial combat by an Fw190 fighter piloted by Uffz Hans-Joachim Stoller from 2./JG26 around 4:25 PM, on a B-17 escort mission to the Méaulte plant in France. 1Lt Young is now buried in the Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, USA.
