William Leroy Mushrush was born on September 20, 1921, in Steubenville, Ohio. He was a fighter pilot who flew P-38 Lightnings with the 394th Fighter Squadron, 367th Fighter Group, Ninth Air Force. He received his wings and his commission at Luke Field in Arizona on October 1, 1943. 1Lt Mushrush flew dangerous ground attack missions against heavily defended German targets in support of American ground forces as they fought their way across France. He was killed in action over France.
1Lt Mushrush is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France. He also has a cenotaph located in Union Cemetery, Ohio.
