When Burnus Wayne Hayden was born on 18 February 1919, in San Diego, San Diego, California, United States, his father, John Southerland Hayden, was 43 and his mother, Josephine B Burns, was 35. He lived in Oceanside, San Diego, California, United States in 1930, and Vista Judicial Township, San Diego, California, United States in 1940.

Piloting the P-38 #44-23681 on 26 July 1944, he took off from Station 347 airfield in Ibsley, England, on a dive-bombing mission to Le Mans, France. At 14h30, he was shot down in aerial combat with enemy fighters but the plane was evacuated by parachute. Unfortunately, he was not able to survive.

1Lt Hayden was originally buried in a cemetery in Maheru, France, but was later transferred. He is now buried in the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, San Diego County, California, USA.
