Henry Holding was a 27-year-old seaman from Boston who served aboard the merchant ship Sultan. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Holding died on March 6, 1815, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
