Richard Holstein was a 33-year-old seaman from Virginia who served aboard the merchant ship Baroness Longerville. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Holstein died on May 25, 1814, with “visual complaint” recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
