John Hopson was a 23-year-old seaman from North Carolina who served aboard the merchant ship Snapdragon. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Hopson died on March 14, 1815, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
