Nathaniel Jenkins was a 20-year-old seaman from Baltimore who served aboard the merchant ship Tom Thumb. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Jenkins died on February 21, 1815, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
