John Jennings was an 18-year-old seaman from Gay Head who served aboard the merchant ship Hawke. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Jennings died on February 22, 1815, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
