John Johnson was a 23-year-old boatswain from Rhode Island who served aboard the merchant ship Criterion. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Johnson died on February 1, 1815, with varicola (smallpox) recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
