Joseph Johnson was a 19-year-old seaman from Connecticut who served aboard the merchant ship Paul Jones. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Barracks No. 5 at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Johnson was killed by gunshot wounds during the Dartmoor Prison Massacre on April 6, 1815, when British militiamen opened fire on assembled American prisoners awaiting repatriation to the United States. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
