Joseph Mack Fluty was born on August 11, 1921, in Kingston County, California. He was the son of John Luther and Ellen Edith (Hoover) Fluty. He was graduated from Visalia High School and had attended Junior College. He had two brothers, John William and Cleo Stanley Fluty.

Joseph joined the Air Corps in March 1942. He served in the Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Fighter Pilot. On March 8, 1944, aboard P-38J 42-67751, he was Killed in Action while returning from a bombing mission over Berlin, Germany. He was a member of the first P-38 group to meet the Nazis from Britain. He went on both bomber escort missions and fighter sweeps.

1Lt Fluty is now buried in the Visalia Public Cemetery, Visalia, Tulare County, California, USA.
