William E. Harbert entered military service in Washington. He served in the 338th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Fighter pilot. On September 16, 1945, 1Lt Harbert was downed in northern Holland close to the German border. It is unknown what exactly happened to him. His body was never recovered. 1Lt Harbert's name is on the Wall of the Missing, Cambridge American Military Cemetery, Cambridge, England.
