Raymond L. Sumpter was born on August 20, 1918, in Pleasant Township, Iowa. He was the son of Fred S Sumpter and Josephine Cassidy Sumpter. He was married to Freda Mae Dunn Leszczynski.
Raymond served in the Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Fighter Pilot. On February 6, 1944, 2Lt Sumpter's P-38J 42-67479 had a collision with Lt. Atchison's P-38 and dove into the channel, 10 miles due south of St. Catherines Point, Isle of Wight. Sumpter was not seen to bail out.
1Lt Sumpter was declared Missing in Action. He is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
