At approximately 1140, 15 miles west of Kiel, Germany, our squadron was bounced by about 20 plus enemy aircraft. We started into a lufbery and I spun out of a sharp climbing turn. Lt. Winter was on my wing before this spin. At the top of the sharp climbing turn we were attacked by the 109s at which point I last saw Lt. Winter, my wingman. I spun out of a sharp climbing turn, lost sight of Lt. Winter and did not see him again."

2Lt Winter is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA. He also has a cenotaph located in Buffalo Township Cemetery, Iowa.
