Ezekiel Mitchell was a 23-year-old seaman from Massachusetts who served aboard the merchant ship Charlotte. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Mitchell died on January 12, 1815, with variola recorded as his cause of death.
