Charles Monte was a 22-year-old seaman from San Antonio who served aboard the merchant ship James. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Monte died on February 21, 1815, with variola recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
