John Montgomery was a 21-year-old seaman from New York who had been impressed into British service at Liverpool. During the War of 1812, he was held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Montgomery died on February 24, 1814, with pneumonia recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
