James Murray was a 24-year-old seaman from Baltimore who served aboard the merchant ship Messenger. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Murray died on October 17, 1813, with pneumonia recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
