Dale Clayton Francis Sr. was born on May 3, 1921. He was married to Ednamae Miller Ruhl.

Dale served in the 81st Fighter Squadron, 50th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Fighter Pilot during World War II. He was a passenger aboard Cessna Bobcat UC-78 #43-7528 when he was killed on July 2, 1944, in a plane crash in England. They were on a transport flight from Carentan to Chilbolton when his aircraft experienced an engine failure and crashed close to St. Mark's Church in Ampfield, England, killing all on board.

2Lt Francis is now buried in the McLane Cemetery, McLane, Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA.
