Edward Norton was a 21-year-old seaman from Massachusetts and the son of the Reverend Jacob Norton and Elizabeth Cranch Norton. During the War of 1812, he served aboard the merchant ship Frolic and was captured off the coast of Cuba on April 20, 1814. He was subsequently held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Norton died there on September 29, 1814, with pneumonia recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England, and is also memorialized on his mother�s headstone in Weymouth, Massachusetts.
