John L. Osborne was an 18-year-old seaman from Newburyport who served aboard the merchant ship Portsmouth. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Osborne died on May 24, 1815, with variola recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
