Joseph Palmer was an 18-year-old seaman from Portsmouth who served aboard the merchant ship Ida. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Palmer died on November 17, 1814, with peripneumonia recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
