Joshua Pettingall was a 19-year-old seaman from Salem who served aboard the merchant ship Enterprise. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Pettingall died on October 7, 1815, with phthisis recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
