John Potter was a 32-year-old seaman from Philadelphia who served aboard the merchant ship Impressed at Gravesend. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Potter died on October 5, 1814, with pneumonia recorded as his cause of death. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
