Raymond H. Gansberg was born on March 28, 1920, in DuPage County, Illinois. He was the son of John Louis Gansberg and Anna Hahndorf Gansberg.

Raymond served in the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as a Captain and Fighter Pilot during World War II. On the operational mission December 5, 1944, Cpt Gansberg, in his P-51 #44-15118, helped to engage 60 plus FW 190s in the Berlin, Germany area and was last seen by his wingman in a dive to bounce some FW 190s. In the dive from 26,000 feet, his wingman went into compressibility, buckled his wings, and blacked out, losing Capt. Gansberg. He was not seen after this dive. Cpt Gansberg was reported Missing in Action that day. His status was changed to Killed in Action on August 6, 1945.

Cpt Gansberg is now buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery, Neupré, Belgium.
