William F. Hartnett was born in 1917 in New York. He was the son of Timothy Hartnett and Martha Fremming Hartnett.

William resided in Erie County, New York, prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on November 27, 1942, in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed as a Shipping and receiving clerk and also as a Single, without dependents.

William served as a Private First Class in the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. He was Killed in Action during the liberation of Choisy au Bac. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
