John Washington was a 25-year-old seaman from Savannah who served aboard the merchant ship Rolla. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Barracks No. 5 at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Washington was killed in the Dartmoor Prison Massacre on April 6, 1815, when British militiamen opened fire on prisoners who had gathered while awaiting repatriation to the United States. He died from gunshot wounds and was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
