Stuart Bernard Mendelsohn was a graduate of Glennville High School and Miami University. He was inducted in May 1942 and went overseas in the same year. He was assigned to the 324th Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group.

On December 31, 1943, piloting the B-17 #42-29895 'The Black Swan,' he and his crew took off from Station 121 airfield in Bassingbourn, England, on a raid mission between Bordeaux and Cognac, France. Their plane was shot down by flak and by enemy fighters in the early afternoon. 2Lt Mendelsohn and the mechanic were killed by shrapnel. The other members evacuated the aircraft by parachute.

2Lt Mendelsohn is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery, Montjoie Saint Martin, France.
