Joseph Williams was a 26-year-old seaman from Martha’s Vineyard who served aboard the merchant ship Clorinde. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Williams died of varicola (smallpox) on February 1, 1815. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
