Frederick Earl McCreary was born on March 9, 1921, in Knox County, Kentucky. He was the son of Taylor Jefferson McCreary and Gracie VanBever McCreary.

Frederick served in the USS Intrepid of the United States Navy during World War II. He was held captive at the Taipei City prison in Taiwan (formerly known as Formosa Island) by the Japanese. While a POW in Taipei, a mock trial was held. ARM1C McCreary, along with 13 other American servicemen, were accused of being "war criminals" by the Japanese Army, sentenced to death, and executed. They were cremated and their ashes placed in a local Japanese Shinto temple. At the end of the war, the remains were turned over to the Allies for burial. ARM1C McCreary's ashes were interred at the Warfield Cemetery, Knox County, Kentucky, USA.
