Robert A. Vandegriff was born on January 8, 1920. He was the husband of Virginia Vandegriff.

Robert enlisted on October 1, 1942, and at the time of his death, was serving in the 524th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Staff Sergeant and Tail Gunner on the B-17 #42-3300.

On September 3, 1943, his crew took off from Station 117 airfield in Kimbolton, England, for a bombing mission to Evreux-Fauville, France. At 09:55H, their plane was shot down by flak, and it was partially evacuated before it exploded. Two bodies were found in the plane. The rest who were able to bail out was taken as prisoners (including SSgt Vandegriff) except for SSgt Frydryk, who was killed by landing on a tree. Their airplane crashed at La Livree - 1 km southeast of Epinay. SSgt Vandegriff was brought to Stalag Luft III in Sagan-Silesia, Poland.

He died on January 18, 2007, at the age of 87. He is now buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
