Donald Burnett Armstrong was born on September 14, 1921, in Excello, Ohio. He was the son of Burnett V. and Marquerite Armstrong.

Donald served in the 524th Bomber Squadron, 379th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Technical Sergeant and Right Waist Gunner on the B-17 #42-3300 during World War II.

On September 3, 1943, his crew took off from Station 117 airfield in Kimbolton, England, for a bombing mission to Evreux-Fauville, France. At 09:55H, their plane was shot down by flak, and it was partially evacuated before it exploded. Two bodies were found in the plane. The rest who were able to bail out was taken as prisoners except for SSgt Frydryk, who was killed by landing on a tree. Their airplane crashed at La Livree - 1 km southeast of Epinay.

TSgt Armstrong was one of those two who were killed in the crash. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France. He also has a cenotaph located in the Woodside Cemetery in Ohio.
