Ruby Clair Barnes was born on July 1, 1890, in Ladoga, France. He was married to Leah Alice Warren Barnes.

Ruby served in Company M, 153rd Infantry Regiment, as a Private during World War I. Trained at Cap Taylor and Camp Beauregard, he sailed for France on August 6, 1918, shortly afterward contracting pneumonia. He died of this on September 4, 1918, while in US Hospital n° 14. He is now buried in the Ladoga Cemetery, Ladoga, Montgomery County, Indiana, USA.
