Joseph Franklin Hardy was born on November 23, 1875, in Rock, Kansas. He was the son of Elisha A Hardy and Mary Jane Harp Hardy. He was married to Ada Elizabeth Horne Hardy.

Mr. Hardy was a pastor of the Baptist Church in Independence, Missouri. He went to Camp Funston for training as a YMCA secretary for foreign service and left for France. On October 6, 1918, Rev Hardy died of pneumonia in Issoudin, France, and is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. He was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
